Where are the timing relays used

Timing relays are widely used in industrial applications, HVAC systems and building services to provide time delay switching. For example, starting a motor, controlling an electrical load, or simply automating an action. They play a vital role in targeted logic requirements.

A common example you may have seen is in a hallway or stairwell that is not used frequently. Maybe at a workplace, or an apartment building. We don't want the light to stay on all the time, we want it to turn off automatically. Therefore, once the light switch is pressed, the time delay relay will keep the light on for a certain period of time. Once this time expires, it automatically cuts power to the light.

Timing relays can be used in almost any application, they can be used as plug-in devices, base mount devices, circuit boards, or even as DIN rail mounted controls.

Traditionally, time relays have only been used as single function, single time range devices. These devices are still available and are typically used in applications with very simple timing requirements.

But we can get more advanced timing relays with different functions and multiple timing ranges. Most are also capable of controlling voltage or current over a wide range, so their applications are not limited. No programming language is required to set them, we just adjust the settings via the dial and the manufacturer's guide will show you how to do this.

Delay relays and switches operate automatically once they are set and provide a trigger or signal to cause action. For multifunction relays, we often find an LED built into the device that flashes at different intervals to indicate the function it is currently performing. The manufacturer's guide will tell us what the LEDs indicate.

To apply a time delay relay or switch, we need to consider where the device will be mounted, what will trigger the device, how long is the delay before the secondary side is energized or how long the secondary side is energized.

What specific functions does the delay relay perform?

     function code

Time Delay Operating Instructions (all time delays perform these 11 functions)

    1 Delay:

When the coil is energized, the ON DELAY timing period begins and the contacts do not switch. At the end of the ON DELAY period, the contacts switch, connecting (normally open contacts) or breaking (normally closed contacts) the load. The contacts remain in the transferred state until power is removed from the coil. They then return to their original state and the unit is ready for a new cycle.

    2 Turn off delay I:

Always supply power to the coil. When the start switch is closed ("dry" external contact), the contact switches, connecting (normally open contact) or disconnecting (normally closed contact) the load. When the start switch is opened, the OFF DELAY timing period begins and the contacts remain in the transition position until the OFF DELAY timing period ends. Then they go back to their original position and the device is ready for a new cycle.

    3 Off Delay II:

Always supply power to the coil. After making and releasing the start switch ("dry" external contact), the OFF DELAY time period begins and the contact switches, connecting (normally open contacts) or disconnecting (normally closed contacts) the load. When the timing period is over, the contacts return to their original positions and the unit is ready for a new cycle.

    4 Interval Delay:

When the coil is energized (the start switch in the multi-function timer must be tripped), the INTERVAL timing period begins, the contacts switch, connect (normally open contacts) or disconnect (normally closed contacts) the load. When the INTERVAL tick ends, the contacts return to their original positions. When the coil is de-energized, the device resets, making the device ready for a new cycle.

    5 cycles of 1 shot (isochronous off/on):

When the timer is powered up, the timing starts. The output relay turns off for the set time, then turns on for the set time for only 1 cycle. The timer is reset when power is removed or when the reset input is applied.

6 repetition cycles (equal on and off delay times):

When the coil is energized, the off period begins; contacts are not transferred. When the off period ends, the on period begins. The contacts transmit, connect (normally open contacts) or disconnect (normally closed contacts) loads. At the end of the ON period, the contacts shift and continue to cycle until power is removed from the coil.

7 Repeat cycles (independent on and off delay time cycles):

When the coil is energized, the ON cycle is initiated by a contact transition (normally open contact closed, normally closed contact open). At the end of the OFF cycle, the contacts are released and the ON cycle begins. The cycle continues until power is removed from the coil.

    8 Signal Interval/Off Delay:

Always supply power to the coil. After closing the start switch ("dry" external contact), the INTERVAL cycle begins; the contact transfers, connecting (normally open contact) or disconnecting (normally closed contact) the load. At the end of the INTERVAL period, the OFF DELAY period begins and the contacts remain in the transmitting state until the end of the OFF DELAY period. The contacts then return to their original positions and the unit is ready for a new cycle.

    9 Signal On Delay/Off Delay:

Always supply power to the coil. When the start switch is closed ("dry" external contact), the ON DELAY cycle begins; contacts are not transferred. At the end of the ON DELAY cycle, the contacts switch, connecting (normally open contacts) or disconnecting (normally closed contacts) the load. After the start switch is released, the OFF DELAY cycle begins; the contacts remain transferred. At the end of the OFF DELAY cycle, the contacts return to their original positions and the unit is ready for a new cycle.

    10 Power-off delay:

When the coil is energized, the contacts switch, connecting (normally open contacts) or disconnecting (normally closed contacts) the load. When the coil is de-energized, the OFF DELAY time period begins; the contact remains transferred. At the end of the OFF DELAY cycle, the contacts return to their original positions and the unit is ready for a new cycle.

    11 Watchdog (Retriggerable Single Shot):

After the input voltage is applied, the delay relay is ready to accept a trigger signal. After the trigger signal is applied, the relay energizes and begins the preset time. At the end of the preset time, the relay de-energizes unless the trigger signal turns off and on before the timeout (before the preset time elapses). Continuously cycling the trigger signal at a rate faster than the preset time will cause the relay to remain energized.
